3D Music Videos Are Going To Blow Your Mind [VR180]

I spent a little time over the holidays exploring YouTube VR on my Oculus Go. (Get one now. Seriously.)

I was super excited to see the quality of content that’s getting out there from all kinds of creators, and I started diving into a new format I hadn’t watched much of before - VR180.

If you haven’t tried it out yet, VR180 is about to be your jam in 2019.

This is a content format that offers a similar sense of immersion as 360° content in the headset, but it’s usually shot in 3D (giving you the sense that you’re actually THERE) and also (very importantly) the content is only happening in front of you.

VR180 video is an awesome and logical evolution for immersive content that addresses a lot of the limits of 360 video.

Directing for 360 video can be tough… Oftentimes there’s just so much happening that it’s hard to get a viewer to focus on one specific thing.

With VR180, you tell a story with a more streamlined experience that directs a viewer’s attention to the point-of-view wonderland right in front of their eyeballs.

Below is a music video that I stumbled across over the holiday. It’s a simple concept for Chloe and Halle (Grammy-nominated R&B musicians) and it’s executed with great creative direction. I think this is a perfect example of VR content that we’ll be seeing a lot more of in 2019.

No VR headset? No problem. This content still works well as a “magic window” on mobile (and desktop too).

This video is part of a whole series of VR180 music videos (hell yes, girls!) from Chloe & Halle. They use single-shot concepts in unique settings to match the aesthetic of each song.

Keep your eyes peeled for more content like this from your favorite musicians…

I can’t wait to start filming VR180 videos with our Insta360 Pro and try this medium out for myself.

With the bar set this high already, 2019 is going to epic.

Thanks for reading!
